Assembly workshop layout optimization [2018]

SELCO team has successfully achieved to employ optimization technologies to redesign the assembly line workshop layout of TOFAS, the leading automobile manufacturer in Turkey. The scope of the project was to
- optimize the layout of in-plant logistics
- change material receiving docks, warehouses, supermarkets (sequencing areas), and other sequencing and kitting areas at Tofas assembly shop,
in order to reduce labor and logistics equipment (forklift, tow-truck, AGV) costs in assembly shop

Using planning and optimization software, the total distance traveled in the plant was minimized to obtain a gain of 5 % in-plant material handling costs.
Using a material-based multi-stop route optimization algorithm, the routing of the in-facility vehicles were optimized to obtain a gain of 20 % in-plant material handling costs.
Using a constraint programming based route assignment optimization, the routing of the vehicles from sequencing areas to assembly lines was optimized to obtain a gain of 10 % in-plant material handling costs.
